Brindisi

Lizzie

“Okay, well then,” our tour guide began. “Brindisi now is known for being a port to the Greek Islands, a modest fisherman’s village, a military base, and for its ancient Roman columns which mark the end of the Appian Way.” As our little tram putted its way around the quaint town marked here and there by significant historical landmarks, I wondered why Brindisi isn’t more well known. Its natural harbor has been in use since before the Roman expansion. After being conquered by the Romans in 267 BCE, it became a Naval base and huge center of maritime trade. Throughout a series of takeovers, wars, and natural disasters, Brindisi has remained true to its roots as a port and military stronghold. To a Los Angelino who thought Boston Common was old, Brindisi practically bled history.

Towards the end of the tour our guide, a pretty young woman obviously proud of each landmark and story of Brindisi’s long and meaningful history, took on a somber note. As we worked our way down a quiet and not-exactly-luxurious part of town, she sighed, “You have seen the Godfather, you think of Italy and you think of the glamorous Mafia. The Mafia is not glamorous and it is not good. The Mafia is a cancer on our society.” Her forlorn tone as she spoke of the plague of the Mafia on Italian society revealed the answer to my earlier musing: the Mafia clearly has a stronghold on Brindisi, and it’s prevented a historically significant town from becoming the cultural mecca it should be.

Hat Trick – Letters for Victoria

Sean

Uk design studio Hat Trick has design a series of letters on a hoarding site in Victoria, London. “We decided to design a typeface of illuminated letters, with each letter telling a different story for passers by to discover,” says Hat-Trick’s Tim Donaldson of the project for Land Securities.

“We wanted to end up with a visually rich and eclectic set of letters to sum up the area,” he continues, “the mix of past, present and future, heritage (royalty, architecture, famous residents), culture, art, green space, wildlife and so on. The style of each individual letter was inspired by the particular story it was telling. We decided the execution could be photographic, illustrative or graphic, depending on what best communicated it, and in a visually engaging way. Each letter became a project in itself.”

I think these are beautiful the lettering, the storytelling, it all just fits together perfectly. If only that amount of attention could be brought to our NYC construction sites. Amazing work.

Mohawk’s Mode of Transportation

Sean

Promoting your paper company can be tricky when your target is designers. You need to show off how your paper looks in a bunch of different printing techniques, while not going over the top. Over the years I have kept some just for the design alone as I’m a sucker for a good printed piece. The focus is to show off the quality of the paper, and the way to do that is endless. This one, designed by VSA Partners for Mohawk, is one I can definitely get behind. Mode of Transformation showcases the evolution of the bicycle to promote their highest quality grade paper: Superfine. Check out more info at FPO (For Print Only).

Here they are, The Beatles

Sean

I was browsing the ol’ typography served on the behance network and came across the number by Yi Thying. It’s a “hand-illustrated typographic portrait of The Beatles inspired by the bold and illustrative typefaces used in their movie, Yellow Submarine. Lyrics from their songs form this marker-rendered portrait.” This would look lovely in my living room.
